Sybil Thomas      Purveyor Of Soul, Jazz, and R&B

Sybil Thomas was born to music royalty. She is the daughter of the legendary Rufus Thomas, the Stax Records artist and famed disc jockey from WDIA radio in Memphis Tennessee. She is also the sister of singer Carla Thomas, who is referred to as the “Queen of Memphis soul.”

Growing up in a musical family, Sybil began singing at five-years-old. Her first big break came in the early ‘70s when she toured Italy with the influential R&B group, The Platters, as the only female singer.

In the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, Sybil worked the New York City circuit, performing at legendary venues such as the Apollo Theatre, 7th Avenue South, and Green Street Bar and Café. In 1982, her group Raw Silk released the disco-funk classic “Do It To the Music” on West End Records, a label that was instrumental in the rise of dance music. The track peaked at No. 5 on Billboard’s Dance Club Songs. The following year, Sybil released her classic debut solo single, “Rescue Me,” on West End. She also appeared on Saturday Night Live, where she appeared in skits with Eddie Murphy and Lily Tomlin and sang backup with Joe Cocker.

During her career, Sybil has toured internationally with Grammy award-winning artists such as Stevie Wonder, Roberta Flack, Peabo Bryson, and George Duke. She has also toured or recorded with artists like Lou Rawls, Luther Vandross, The Pointer Sisters, Phyllis Hyman, and Gary Bartz. Her captivating voice has been heard on several internationally aired commercials for Max Factor, Britannia Jeans, and Yoplait Yogurt, to name a few.

After years of recording and touring with other artists, Sybil, who is now based in Hong Kong, is embarking on a new chapter of her career. In March 2018, she will release her debut solo album, Breathe, and perform at the Kota Kinabalu Jazz Festival (https://kkjazzfest.com/). The dynamic 12-track project is a contemporary take on classic R&B and features production and arrangements from Quincy Jones collaborator, Makoto. With it, Sybil will Breathe new life into her musical journey.
